My first Kangeiko

Being able to get up early, greet a wonderful new day and creating a morning that includes appreciation for your blessings such as the fortune to have woken up and have a precious human life and getting the physical and psychological benefits of practicing Aikido.

To promise that I am going to use all my energies to develop myself, to expand my heart out to others, to achieve enlightenment for the benefit of all beings and to benefit others as much as I can.

The beautiful feeling that I haven’t missed one of the greatest feats of nature, the rise of the sun and the way how the day slowly gets brighter, when the midnight blue turns to lighter blue and the brilliant colors start to seep into the sky and the nature is painted in incredible colors.

The advantage of getting a head start by the time everyone else gets in to work. The practice of Aikido which is ultimately the practice of our daily lives which involves some sort of conflict with others, with our environments, with our bodies or with ourselves and to be trained to see the conflicts as the creative force of change which makes true growth and learning possible and not something to be avoided and struggled with.

This is what I get in mind, thinking back over the one week of Kan Geiko training. Yes, it was about capability training, keeping promises, beautiful feelings, getting benefits and practicing to improve our daily lives.

Aikidoka doen nieuwjaarsduik

Beste aikido-genootjes.

Peggy submitted this funny pic of the 31-count jo kata! I guess we all recognise that slide from confidence to confusion midway the kata :)

And here's how Saito Sensei used to do it:

Ilja's shodan exam

I passed my shodan exam today at the Dutch Aikikai Foundation in Amsterdam! My gratitude goes out to Francisca and Robert Sensei for teaching me, to Robin for being a fabulous uke, and to Anni and Idris for being present and supportive.

A big thank you also to everyone in the dojo who practiced with me or otherwise encouraged me. I have been with this dojo for almost three years and I have loved every second of it. It's my second home, a welcoming place where I can share my passion with likeminded people.

Thank you all.

Francisca Sensei demonstrates at Olympic Committee meeting

Last Tuesday evening I attended a meeting of the NOC-NSF, the main sports/Olympic committee in the Netherlands. Sam, a student of my own teacher Wilko Vriesman, and I opened the meeting with an Aikido demonstration.

The entire committee's board, as well as its previous chairman - former Olympic medal swimmer and the government's Secretary of Sports - Erica Terpstra watched as we showed various facets of Aikido.

It was a great pleasure and honour. We had been invited because a demonstration by Wilko and his students during the recent celebration of 50 years of Aikido in the Netherlands had impressed Andre Bolhuis, the current chair of NOC-NSF.

Our demonstration showed the meeting two things: that Aikido can be practiced throughout one's entire life and that Aikido can make a meaningful contribution to top sport.

Francisca.
